Once, two college students were gossiping on their way back from college. They spoke about their current exam schedule, the new teaching methods of different lecturers, and felt pity for those who didn't make it through the exams. After a while, they decided to sit in a park by the road and continue their conversation a little longer.
Gradually, their conversation turned to 'destiny.' One student vehemently disagreed with the concept, calling it a cop-out for failures! 'It is nothing but the cowardly attitude of a person; when he fails to accomplish something, he just say; it wasn't in their destiny!
But, the other one tried to convince his friend. He simply cited the incident that happened in the morning! Being excited he said, 'You know what? Today while I was on the highway, I noticed a lady was buying something from a stall below. Suddenly, I heard a loud screaming. I was shocked! I just stopped my scooter. That same lady was lying on the road in a pool of blood. She died on the spot. Ten minutes later, I came to know a car lost control on the highway, flew off the bridge, and crushed her. What a fate that lady had today! I couldn't breathe for a second! Everything was so sudden!
His friend listened to him silently. Then he nodded and said, "'Umm...it is unfortunate that this happened, and I do understand your point, but it was her bad luck, bad time—that's it!'"
'What bad time, bad luck? That is called 'destiny'! You know what? If you are destined to die in an accident, whatever precautions you may take, it will happen at any cost! Nobody can stop it!'"
'That is ridiculous!'" his friend exclaimed.
They spoke for a while more and soon they both felt hungry. Just outside the park, under a coconut tree, a 'panipuri-walla' was selling his delicious, mouth-watering food. He was quite famous for his panipuri. Most of the college students used to spend their time enjoying his food. When both friends reached there, a few streetlights were already switched on, indicating the presence of night. Still, they continued their conversation. Eventually, they finished the food, and since the one who came by scooter lived a little distance away, he asked his friend to go home first. The plan was that he would pay the panipuri-walla and then go home easily by scooter. He insisted so much that his friend had no choice.
His friend wished him "good night" and walked away. He was not far away when he suddenly heard loud screaming, with people rushing toward the coconut tree where the panipuri-walla stood. He couldn't understand anything, but his curiosity increased! He turned back and went to the spot. All the people were so shocked; nobody could give the exact explanation of the fatal accident. He couldn't resist anymore. His heart pounded heavily. He pushed through the crowd and looked at the ground where his friend was lying dead, blood trickling down from his forehead. Looking at his friend's deadbody, he lost his became unconscious!
When he regained his senses, he couldn't control his tears and shouted, 'No way...no way...you can't die like this...please...please. After a while, he realised that he could no longer help his friend, so he closed his eyes and muttered, 'Rest in peace, my dear friend.'
Time had passed since that incident, but his mind was stuck on his friend's last discussion about 'Destiny'! Unconsciously, most of the time he would murmur, 'Yes, dear! It was destiny! I disagreed with you that day, but now I understand: you are absolutely right, my friend, and I am wrong! Now, I do believe in destiny, dear; otherwise, why else would a coconut fall upon your head to end your life? Other people were also there—why had it fallen on you?'
In due course of time, he completed his education, but that fatal accident and the sudden death of his friend left a mark, and at last he wrote a small novel, The Destiny, as a the tribute. In the preface, he wrote:
'The most powerful, unbeatable, and inevitable force in this Universe is nothing but Destiny! Destiny is that part of life a person brings with him when he comes into this world! It is a part of life, interlocked from birth! No matter what may come, you will be what you are destined to be! Follow the right path- nobody knows what's ahead! I remember that my beloved friend had mentioned during our conversation, when we were college-going students, some other examples regarding this destiny. He spoke about the life of Mr. Nelson Mandela, the African hero! He was destined to be a world figure! From nowhere, he became one of the most famous persons, not only in Africa but also in the world! However, 'Life' is a mysterious journey! Although I lost my friend long, long ago, his persuasion—his belief in prophecy or astrology—compelled me to dive deep into this venture, and at last, I decided to write a book on 'Destiny'!"
